About Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS)
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS), formerly the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, is Mumbai's principal museum. The Indo-Saracenic building was completed in 1915, served as a military hospital and children's welfare centre during the First World War and was inaugurated as a museum on 10 January 1922. It is a Grade I heritage building and was renamed in 1998. The galleries cover Indian art, archaeology and natural history, from Indus Valley artefacts to miniature paintings, arms and decorative arts, and there is a separate Children's Museum in the grounds. The lawns and auditoriums host talks, workshops, exhibitions and performances, and the museum is a venue for the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival.
