About Royal Opera House, Mumbai
The Royal Opera House on Mama Parmanand Marg, near Charni Road and Girgaon Chowpatty, is India's only surviving opera house. Its foundation stone was laid in 1909, King George V inaugurated it in 1911 while it was still being built, and it was completed in 1912. It later became a cinema, closed in 1993 and stayed shut for 23 years. Restoration began in 2008, and the theatre reopened in October 2016 with a recital by the soprano Patricia Rozario. The project won an Award of Merit in the 2017 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation. The baroque auditorium seats 575 over three levels and now hosts English and Hindi plays, musicals, concerts, opera recitals and children's shows. It is owned by the royal family of Gondal.
