Things to do in Girgaon & Charni Road

Girgaon is the old Marathi and Gujarati heart of the island city, running from Charni Road to the bazaars of Kalbadevi and Bhuleshwar. The restored Royal Opera House, India's only surviving opera house, hosts theatre, music and children's shows, and Girgaon Chowpatty is the beach where the city's biggest Ganesh idols, including Lalbaugcha Raja, are immersed on Anant Chaturdashi. The neighbourhood is known for its Gudi Padwa new-year procession, its Ganeshotsav mandals, the heritage lanes of Khotachiwadi and Mani Bhavan, Gandhi's Mumbai base from 1917 to 1934. Charni Road and Grant Road are on the Western Line, and the Aqua Line stops at Girgaon, Grant Road and Kalbadevi.
