About Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum

The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Byculla East is Mumbai's oldest museum. It was established in 1855 as a treasure house of the decorative and industrial arts and was renamed in 1975 in honour of Dr Bhau Daji Lad. A five-year restoration led by the conservation architect Vikas Dilawari won UNESCO's Asia-Pacific Award of Excellence for cultural conservation in 2005, and after a further two-year restoration the museum reopened to the public on 8 January 2025. Its collection documents the history, crafts and communities of Mumbai through maps, models, dioramas and decorative objects. The museum also runs contemporary exhibitions, talks, film screenings and children's workshops, and it shares its grounds with the Byculla zoo and botanical garden.
