Weekend Activities for Kids in Mumbai: A Parent's Guide

Updated 2026-10-12 Β· 7 min read Β· by the mumbai2go team

The short answer: for a sure-fire weekend with children in Mumbai, pick one anchor (the Nehru Science Centre, the Museum of Solutions, KidZania, the Byculla zoo or Sanjay Gandhi National Park) and add one small thing nearby. Mumbai punishes ambitious itineraries, because distances are long and children do not enjoy an hour in a taxi. This guide groups the options by type and by age, with the nearest station for each. For shows and workshops on this Saturday and Sunday, see our live kids and family events page.

Science and museums

Nehru Science Centre, Worli

The Nehru Science Centre is the easiest full day in the city. It is India’s largest interactive science centre, with more than 500 hands-on exhibits on energy, sound, mechanics and transport, an eight-acre outdoor science park and a 3D science show. Since the Aqua Line opened, it also has its own metro station, Science Centre, right outside. Plan three to four hours. Weekday mornings are full of school groups, so go in the afternoon if you can.

Nehru Planetarium, Worli

The planetarium is part of the Nehru Centre, about a kilometre from the science centre, and was commissioned in 1977. Sky shows run at fixed times, so check the day’s schedule and language before you go. Older children can add the Discovery of India exhibition in the same complex, whose 14 galleries walk through Indian history.

Museum of Solutions (MuSo), Lower Parel

MuSo is a children’s museum on Pandurang Budhkar Marg, built around making things and solving problems rather than looking at display cases. It runs masterclasses and an annual art competition alongside general entry. Entry is ticketed, and weekend slots fill up, so book on its website first.

CSMVS and the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum

CSMVS in Fort has a separate Children’s Museum in its grounds and runs holiday workshops; the main museum’s natural history and arms galleries tend to hold children’s attention longest. In Byculla, the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai’s oldest, reopened in January 2025 and runs children’s workshops. Its models and dioramas of old Bombay work well for ages eight and up.

Animals and the outdoors

The Byculla zoo

Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, still called Rani Baug by most of the city, covers about 50 acres and has been a public garden since 1862. The zoo is best known for its penguins. It is next to the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, so the two make a single outing, and Byculla station on the Central Line is a ten-minute walk away.

Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali

A real forest inside city limits. For children the draw is the Van Rani mini train, which resumed service in 2026 after a five-year break, and the lion and tiger safaris. Families with older children can go on to the Kanheri Caves, rock-cut Buddhist caves from the 1st to the 10th century CE, deep inside the park. Go early, carry water and hats, and keep snacks zipped away from the monkeys. Our Borivali page has more on the area.

Beaches and promenades

Juhu Beach and Girgaon Chowpatty are for sandcastles and bhel at sunset, not for swimming. Marine Drive, Carter Road and the Coastal Road promenade at Worli are flat and good for scooters and cycles. All are free; see our list of free things to do in Mumbai.

Thane and Navi Mumbai

In Thane, Upvan Lake and Masunda Lake are the evening walks. In Navi Mumbai, Wonders Park in Nerul and Central Park in Kharghar are the big family parks, and flamingos visit the wetlands off Palm Beach Road in winter.

Role-play, malls and games

KidZania, inside R City Mall in Ghatkopar West, is a miniature city where children aged 4 to 16 try out adult jobs. It opened in 2013 and was India’s first. A visit takes several hours, so it is a day plan, not a quick stop. Book ahead for weekends and school holidays.

The big malls all run children’s programming at weekends: Phoenix Palladium in Lower Parel, Phoenix Marketcity in Kurla, Lake Shore Mall (formerly Viviana) in Thane, which has a games arcade, and Nexus Seawoods in Navi Mumbai, which is built around Seawoods–Darave station. Expect craft workshops, character appearances and festive installations around Diwali and Christmas.

Shows and stage

Children’s theatre in Mumbai is concentrated at weekends and in school holidays.

  • The Royal Opera House has two family musicals this month: Chhota Bheem The Musical on Sunday 18 October 2026 at 4 pm, and The Wizard of Oz on Saturday 24 October at 5.30 pm and Sunday 25 October at 11.30 am. Its children’s shows are listed for ages three and up.
  • Prithvi Theatre in Juhu programmes children’s plays, with more in the summer holidays. It is closed on Mondays.
  • The NCPA and St. Andrew’s Auditorium take touring children’s musicals and magic shows.

Every child needs a ticket at most venues, and the minimum age is on each listing. This weekend’s shows are on our kids events this weekend page.

Conventions and festivals coming up

When What Where
17–18 October 2026 GamingCon Bharat and Meeplecon (board games) Bombay Exhibition Centre, NESCO, Goregaon
8 November 2026 Diwali: lantern and diya workshops in the weeks before Malls, museums and studios across the city
28–29 November 2026 Navi Mumbai Comic Con CIDCO Exhibition Centre, Vashi
20 December 2026 “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” concert NCPA, Nariman Point
30 January – 7 February 2027 Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, with a free children’s section Kala Ghoda, Fort

Older children and teenagers get the most out of Comic Con: cosplay, comics, gaming zones and anime. The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival’s children’s events are free, but workshops need registration and fill quickly.

By age

  • Under 5: the zoo, beaches and promenades, mall play zones and short puppet or storytelling sessions. Keep outings to two or three hours.
  • 5 to 10: the science centre, KidZania, the national park’s mini train and safaris, the planetarium and children’s musicals.
  • 11 and over: the Kanheri Caves, a ferry to Elephanta (not on Mondays), a heritage walk in Fort, Comic Con, an Indian Super League match at the Mumbai Football Arena or a workshop in pottery, robotics or art.

Rainy-day plan

From June to September, plan for indoor options and keep travel short. The science centre and planetarium in Worli, MuSo in Lower Parel and KidZania in Ghatkopar are the dependable ones; museum workshops and mall activities fill the gaps. On days of very heavy rain, check train running status before you leave, since waterlogging can delay the suburban lines. Our indoor things to do page lists what is on.

Practical tips for parents

  • One zone per day. Pair Worli with Lower Parel, Byculla with Fort, or Ghatkopar with Powai. Do not try to cross the city.
  • Trains with children are manageable at weekends outside peak hours; avoid them from 8 to 11 am and 5 to 9 pm on working days. The Aqua Line is air-conditioned and has lifts.
  • Check closed days. Museums and the zoo each keep one weekly day off, and it is not the same day everywhere.
  • Carry water, hats and a change of clothes. The outdoor science park, the zoo and the national park have long unshaded stretches.
  • Book the anchors. MuSo, KidZania and popular shows sell out on weekends and in the Diwali and Christmas holidays.
